<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>By Mondrein Mikolei Lizarte</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Morning in the Philippines often begins slowly. The sea is calm, tricycles hum through quiet streets, and the air carries a warmth that feels both tropical and familiar. For many retirees, this rhythm becomes life itself—unhurried, welcoming, and deeply human. It is in these ordinary moments that the Philippines reveals its greatest strength—its natural way of making people feel at home, albeit far from what is familiar.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond its postcard landscapes, the Philippines offers a way of living shaped by connection. Filipino hospitality is not a slogan but a daily practice—felt in shared meals, spontaneous conversations, and communities that look out for one another. Foreign Retirees are not treated as visitors passing through, but as neighbors woven into the fabric of local life. This sense of belonging, more than any view or amenity, is what stays with them.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-1024x684.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4992" srcset="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-300x200.jpg 300w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-768x513.jpg 768w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-2048x1368.jpg 2048w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-150x100.jpg 150w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-696x465.jpg 696w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-1068x713.jpg 1068w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revDSC08452-1920x1282.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">SRRV retirees gather at Rizal Park during the SRRV Heritage Tour under PRA’s We CARE program, highlighting cultural immersion and community engagement.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Life here is also defined by choice and balance. Retirees can wake up to ocean views or cooler mountain mornings, enjoy fresh local cuisine, and live comfortably without excess. The cost of living allows space for leisure, healthcare, and discovery, while modern conveniences remain within reach. It is a place where simplicity and comfort coexist, allowing retirees to focus on living well.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-683x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4993" srcset="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-200x300.jpg 200w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-150x225.jpg 150w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-300x450.jpg 300w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-696x1044.jpg 696w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-1068x1602.jpg 1068w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-1920x2880.jpg 1920w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/revRAF09393-scaled.jpg 1707w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">An SRRV retiree participates in the SRRV Golf Tournament in Intramuros, promoting active and social living among foreign retirees in the country.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These qualities have earned international recognition, with the Philippines named Best Retirement Destination in Asia at the TripZilla Excellence Awards 2025. Voted on by travelers across Southeast Asia, the award reflects a growing appreciation for the country as a retirement haven—one that values experience over extravagance and community over convenience. It affirms the Philippines’ quiet confidence as a destination where life after work can truly begin.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="719" src="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-1024x719.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4996" srcset="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-1024x719.jpg 1024w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-300x211.jpg 300w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-768x539.jpg 768w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-150x105.jpg 150w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-696x488.jpg 696w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1-1068x749.jpg 1068w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/pra_1.jpg 1244w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Philippines was named Asia’s Best Retirement Destination on February 11, 2026, with Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) General Manager Roberto Z. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Supporting this journey is the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) through its Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) program, which enables foreign nationals and former Filipinos to build a long-term life in the country with ease and security. More than a policy, the program represents an invitation—to stay, to belong, and to discover why retirement in the Philippines continues to feel like coming home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>By Roel Hoang Manipon</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every year, residents of Tabawan Island gather for one of their important celebrations, the Pagkamboan. Those living or working in other places but who trace their roots to the island return home to be with families and friends for a tradition of honoring and remembering the dead and the spirits of ancestors, practiced even before the arrival of Islam in Tawi-Tawi.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tawi-Tawi, a cluster of islands between the Sulu and Celebes Seas, is the southernmost province of the Philippines, predominantly populated by the Sama, the seafaring people of Maritime Southeast whose traditional home range also includes parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. The Philippine Sama is generally grouped into the land-dwelling Sama Diliya and the mostly sea-dwelling Sama Dilaut, who are known for their houses built over the water and standing on stilts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have been coming to Tawi-Tawi for several times, fascinated with the Sama ways of life and traditional cultures. This time, we were going to Tabawan Island upon the invitation of Omarjan Ibrahim Jahuran, writer, cultural worker and Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative of the municipality of South Ubian.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After about two hours on a speedboat from Bongao, the capital of Tawi-Tawi, that sliced through the Celebes Sea, we arrived in Tabawan Island, the main island of South Ubian, in the northeast part of the province, a day before the Pagkamboan, which fell on March 5 in 2024. Pagkamboan is celebrated three to five days before the start of Ramadan, a time for fasting in Islam, in the Islamic lunar month of Nisfu.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Sama Tabawan live in about four residential clusters, in houses built on stilts over the water, on the shores of the island, leaving most of the land area uninhabited. The Sama are afraid of ghosts which haunt the land but cannot cross the water, joked Jahuran, who has been advocating for the safeguarding of the heritage and traditions of his home island including the Pagkamboan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the Pagkamboan is still practiced in some communities in Tawi-Tawi, Tabawan’s celebration is most likely the biggest and most vibrant, and the Pagkamboan is one of the most compelling manifestation of the ancient practice of ancestor veneration that survives until today among the Sama people.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many believe that Islam was brought to Tawi-Tawi by Sheikh Karim’ul Makhdum, said to be an Arab missionary from Syria, who arrived in 1380 in Simunul Island (Some say in Sibutu Island).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, ancestor veneration still survives in some form or way, mostly syncretized with the prevalent religion, especially among the Sama Tabawan. It is in our way of life, said Jahuran. And this can be observed in everyday life, not just during Pagkamboan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While at the house of the grandmother of Almunshar Alpha Astarani, one of our guides, we noticed an empty room, reserved for the spirits of the family’s ancestors, should they decide to stay or rest for a while. While it is not forbidden to stay or sleep in the room, no one uses the room. The big houses for the ancestors, the luma pagkamboan, have similar purposes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An important part of Pagkamboan is visiting the grave site, which is located on Bumbun at the northwest tip of Tabawan. Yearly, Tabawan residents make a pilgrimage to the gravesite to take care of the graves of their dead and perform rituals. Even the day before Pagkamboan, some residents visited the site to avoid the crowd.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While most of Bumbun is dedicated to the Muslim dead, there is an area for the Catholic dead. The town has a very small population of Catholics and even Chinese-Filipino. Some residents tell stories about a creature that prowls Bumbun Island. The kangkang laut, which looks like a large monitor lizard or even a dinosaur, is said to emerge at midnight to dig up fresh graves and devour the newly buried dead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The day before the Pagkamboan, residents were already preparing, particularly cooking the two foods that are always present during the special occasions—the panyam and the jah—both made of rice flour.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We met 61-year-old Jannatun Jahuran, who has finished making trays of panyam.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is the panyam to be included in the dulang (food tray) for the prayer to our ancestors tomorrow that we call kamboan, during the month of Sha’aban. Panyam and jah should always be present for the prayer ritual during kambo’an especially here in our community, in the barangay of Tangngah. We should offer these rice cakes for our dead ancestors,” she explained in her native Tabawan dialect of the Central Sama or Sinama language.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a nearby house, we observed another woman cook the cake. Rice flour, brown sugar and coconut milk were mixed to form the batter, which was then fried in oil. Using a wooden stick, she made dents on the edges of the cake to make it look like a flower.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At another house, we met 28-year-old Marhaini Asande, making the jah. She said she learned how to cook jah from her neighbor.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the panyam and the jah already prepared and the sun slowly setting in a blinding blaze over the water with rays piercing through cracks and slits of the langgal and the luma maheya, residents readied themselves for more cooking and the trip to the graveyard the following day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The day of the Pagkamboan started early. Before the sun rose as the community was still sleeping, elders and religious leaders gathered for a meeting inside the luma maheya and decided to go to Bumbun ahead of the crowd to perform the little rituals on each grave, knowing they would be pulled here and there by people to say a prayer on the graves of relatives and family members. As the rays of the sun crept through the rows of roofs, the elders boarded a boat and headed to Bumbun.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By seven in the morning, families, groups of friends and their guests in small boats started to make their way to the graveyard island. Later, more boats appeared until a line of boats has formed like a procession on water. The shore of Bumbun would be covered with boats. Those who arrived late would have to hop from boat to boat to reach the shore.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The graves were marked by the sunduk, the grave marker of the Sama, made of wood or stone. There are two kinds of sunduk—the phallic ones, indicating the dead was male and the flat ones, indicating the dead was female. The traditional ones are characterized by decorative carvings called ukkil or okir.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The graveyard was now busy with people. For Catholic Filipinos, the scene is reminiscent of the undas on November 1.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tabawan residents gathered sand and replenished the graves that have eroded through the year. Elders or imams performed the ceremonial pouring of water using a coconut shell over the sunduk and recited prayers or supplications. Some would leave items, such as cigarettes, favorites of the dead when they were still living, as offerings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By late morning, residents returned to their homes and continued preparing food for offering and feasting. The food items, dishes and drinks went to the preparation of the dulang, which refers to the traditional circular food trays, as well as the arrangement of food on the dulang, or modern receptacles in place of the dulang. Plastic or aluminum tubs or basins are now commonly used.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We dropped by the busy kitchen of Tang-ngah barangay captain Nuthamima Abdurajak Sarajan, who was cooking up a feast with the help of her sisters Sitti Jumliha Abdurajak and Nurbaria Abdurajak, constantly moving around kitchen and dissipating the steam that came out from the pots. They showed us the different stews and their wadjit, a sweet treat made of black glutinous rice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By noon, residents began bringing their dulangs to the luma pagkamboan in their area. We passed by the luma pagkamboan in the barangay of Laud, which was beginning to be filled with dulangs. But the Tang-ngah luma pagkamboan has been the most popular one for residents. Soon, the house overflowed with dulangs, spilling into the letehan. More people still arrived bearing their dulangs. Those who resided far from the luma pagkamboan arrived by boats.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Surrounded by a sea of dulangs inside the luma pagkamboan, the elders and imams started the pagduwa-a, praying for thanksgiving and supplications to the ancestor spirits, both in the Central Sama, the language of their ancestors, and in Arabic, the language of their religion, and inviting them to partake of the feast or food offerings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Pagkamboan recognizes the interconnection, interdependence and harmonious relationship between the world of the living and the ancestral spirits and dead members of the community, who they invoke and talk to from time to time in the graveyard or in the ancestors’ house as if they are beings in a different dimension or parallel universe,” Jahuran explained.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He said, “This shared communal value provides social cohesion among the inhabitants of the island community.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="577" src="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-1024x577.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4987" srcset="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-300x169.jpg 300w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-768x432.jpg 768w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-2048x1153.jpg 2048w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-150x84.jpg 150w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-696x392.jpg 696w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Omarjan-Ibrahim-Jahuran-writer-and-South-Ubian_s-Indigenous-Peoples-Mandatory-Representative-who-has-been-promoting-his-home_s-traditions-1920x1081.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Omarjan Ibrahim Jahuran, writer and South Ubian’s Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative, who has been promoting his home’s traditions.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though still practiced, the Pagkamboan is in danger of vanishing together with other traditions, many distinct to the island. The old, traditional structures are also experiencing disrepair. A heritage advocate, Jahuran authored an ordinance identifying Tabawan’s intangible and tangible pusaka kamboan or cultural heritage and mandating their safeguarding. It was unanimously passed on November 16, 2020. The list included structures and sites such as the langgal, the luma maheya, the Bohe Deya or forest well, the entosan (traditional log pressing mechanism), laitan (an island for sail stitching), Kuta Tabawan or Tabawan Fort, which some believe to have been built before the arrival of Islam, and Bumbun. Identified intangible cultural heritage elements are paghinang sunduk or the making of traditional wooden grave markers; pag-anom tepo Tabawan or the weaving of Tabawan mats; pagjamu, the communal spirit appeasement ritual; pagduwata, a healing ritual; igal Tabawan, or traditional dance with steps unique to Tabawan; tagunggu’an Tabawan or titik Tabawan, traditional ensemble music; panyam maka ja or the making of traditional ritual rice cakes; and the Pagkamboan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the pagduwa-a, residents retrieved their dulangs and brought them to their homes. The feasting began, where everyone is invited. We had the honor to partake of a meal with the village elders. Our hosts invited us to a second one in their home. There would be more invitations to eat as we wound our way through the community. A large family and their friends and neighbors partook of a feast laid out on the walkway beside their house, and anyone who passed by is invited to join in.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4988" srcset="https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-300x169.jpg 300w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-768x432.jpg 768w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-150x84.jpg 150w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-696x392.jpg 696w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://lakbaymagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rev-Tang-ngah-barangay-1920x1080.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here in Tabawan Island during Pagkamboan, food is also an important part bringing together people, even of different cultures, strangers and friends, and it also connects the living and the departed, those who are away to home, the body and the spirit, and the past and the present and hopefully the future.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seasoned hospitality executive Melissa J. Carlos is the new Vice President for Commercial of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC). Her recent appointment came to further strengthen the company’s senior leadership team as it continues to expand its portfolio and reinforce its position as one of the Philippines&#8217; leading hospitality groups.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She has over three decades of experience in business strategy, revenue optimization, brand development, and hotel operations. She has built an impressive track record of driving sustainable growth, maximizing profitability, and leading multi-property teams across some of the country&#8217;s most respected hospitality brands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Prior to joining SMHCC, Melissa served as Group Director of Sales &amp; Marketing at Robinsons Hotels &amp; Resorts, where she oversaw sales and events, revenue and reservations, and marketing and public relations across the group&#8217;s hotel portfolio. She was responsible for accelerating business growth, strengthening brand positioning, and spearheading pre-opening strategies for new hotel developments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She also spent a decade of service with Seda Hotels, where she served as Senior Group Director of Commercial &amp; Revenue Management after over 10 years as Group Director of Sales &amp; Marketing. During her tenure, she led the successful launch of 12 Seda hotels nationwide, developed integrated revenue-generating initiatives, and provided strategic oversight of forecasting, budgeting, and business performance across the group.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her hospitality career also includes leadership positions with Fraser Place Manila, where she served as General Manager and previously Director of Sales &amp; Marketing, consistently delivering strong financial results while overseeing hotel operations and long-term business planning. Earlier in her career, she held key roles at The Heritage Hotel Manila, managing major corporate accounts and contributing significantly to the property&#8217;s revenue growth.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For SMHCC, Melissa will oversee business development functions, including Sales, Marketing, Revenue Management, Reservations, Public Relations, Digital Marketing, and Brand Communications across the company&#8217;s portfolio of hotels, convention centers, and upcoming developments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I am truly honored to join SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation at such an exciting and transformative time in its growth journey,&#8221; said Ms. Carlos.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;SMHCC is home to an impressive portfolio of hospitality brands and destinations that have set benchmarks for excellence in the industry. I look forward to working alongside our talented teams to further strengthen our market presence, cultivate meaningful partnerships, and develop innovative strategies that create long-term value for our guests, clients, and stakeholders. Together, we will continue building on SMHCC&#8217;s strong foundation, elevating the guest experience, and contributing to the company&#8217;s vision of shaping the future of Philippine hospitality,&#8221; she added.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Women leading with purpose</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the center of this evolution is Cluster General Manager Maria Manlulu-Garcia, who oversees both hotels with a leadership philosophy rooted in purpose, empathy, and operational discipline. She is supported by two strong female leaders who play pivotal roles in shaping each property’s direction and guest experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Novotel Manila Araneta City, Hotel Manager Joy De Mesa drives commercial performance and elevates service quality through her extensive background in operations and sales. Her leadership emphasizes consistency, guest connection, and the continual strengthening of operational excellence.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At ibis Styles Manila Araneta City, Resident Manager Felicia Aye Chan Mon brings global brand expertise and a creative, guest centered mindset. Her energetic approach fosters a service culture that is dynamic, expressive, and true to the ibis Styles personality, ensuring memorable and meaningful experiences for every guest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Women rising through the ranks</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Araneta Hotels Inc. proudly highlights the inspiring journeys of the women who rose through the organization and now hold key executive roles. Their achievements reflect the company’s dedication to nurturing internal talent and providing equal opportunities for long-term professional growth. Marife Tolentino began as Accounting Manager in 2015 and now serves as Cluster Director of Finance, where she plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the financial health of both properties. She oversees strategic financial planning, drives fiscal discipline, strengthens internal controls, and ensures that financial operations align with the organization’s growth objectives. Her leadership has been instrumental in maintaining operational efficiency, supporting commercial performance, and guiding both hotels through evolving market demands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kristine Alba, who joined Novotel Manila in February 2018 as Talent and Culture Manager, now serves as Cluster Director of People and Culture for both hotels. She leads initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, foster talent development, and build a workplace anchored in empathy, inclusivity, and meaningful connection. Her people first approach has been vital in nurturing a motivated, high performing workforce.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therese Galindo, who started as Guest Relations Manager in 2015, now heads Guest Experience, Sustainability, and Safety for both hotels. She has played a key role in elevating service standards and championing sustainability efforts, including leading the successful achievement of Green Key certification for both Novotel and ibis Styles Manila. This accomplishment reinforces the hotels’ commitment to environmental responsibility, operational efficiency, and sustainable tourism.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emerging leaders include Janelle Crisostomo, who began her Novotel journey in 2023 as Rooms Division Manager and now serves as Director of Rooms. She attributes her growth to mastering the complexities of guest operations and leading with adaptability. Under her leadership, Novotel Manila achieved a significant milestone as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, with its Presidential Suite named the Philippines&#8217; Leading Hotel Suite 2025 at the World Travel Awards. This recognition reflects her dedication to elevating product standards, refining guest touchpoints, and strengthening the overall rooms experience. “The rooms division is the heart of hotel operations, and thriving here means embracing challenges as opportunities to innovate,” she says. “Leadership is about consistency, understanding your people, and elevating the guest experience through collective effort.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">May Malagamba, who joined Novotel Manila in 2018 as Director of Events Management and now leads Food &amp; Beverage, highlights the importance of passion and persistence. Under her leadership, the F&amp;B division has earned multiple distinctions, including Novotel Manila Araneta City being named Best F&amp;B Performer at the Accor Asia Awards 2023 and winning Accor’s Best Breakfast Satisfaction 2024. “Food and beverage is fast paced and ever evolving. You cannot succeed here without heart,” she says. “Events taught me precision, creativity, and the value of anticipating needs. I carried these lessons with me when I transitioned to Director of F&amp;B, and I continue to grow by adapting and learning every day.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kim Escaler also exemplifies dedication and upward progression. She began her career as Reservations Supervisor in 2015 and now serves as Cluster Director of Revenue Management, overseeing strategy and commercial performance for both hotels. Her analytical mindset and strong commercial insight support revenue initiatives that balance guest value with business sustainability.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At ibis Styles Manila, Izza Mojica leads as Director of Rooms after beginning her career as Duty Manager at Novotel in 2017. She credits resilience and a service driven mindset for her development. “Frontline operations shape you,” she says. “You learn to stay calm in pressure filled situations and find solutions with a smile. These challenges prepared me to lead and to understand both guest behavior and team dynamics.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The growing prominence of women in leadership roles reflects an important shift in the hospitality industry, where emotional intelligence, resilience, adaptability, and a people focused approach have become essential qualities for long-term success. Araneta Hotels Inc. believes that empowering women at all levels strengthens the organization by fostering innovation, enhancing team culture, and encouraging inclusive decision making. These leaders serve as powerful role models, demonstrating that leadership opportunities are attainable with determination, capability, and the right support system.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With these women at the forefront of hotel operations, Novotel and ibis Styles Manila Araneta City continue to set the standard for progressive hospitality in the Philippines. Their collective leadership signals a new chapter defined by purpose-driven management, cultural transformation, and a commitment to uplifting both people and communities. Araneta Hotels Inc. remains dedicated to championing diversity, nurturing talent, and celebrating the profound impact women bring to the hospitality landscape.</p>
