Manila is often seen as a gateway to the Philippines, but spending a weekend in the country’s capital reveals a destination filled with history, culture, food, and unforgettable experiences. From centuries-old churches and heritage districts to lively food streets and breathtaking sunsets over Manila Bay, there’s far more to explore than most visitors expect.

The secret to enjoying Manila isn’t trying to squeeze every attraction into one weekend. Instead, focus on neighborhoods that showcase different sides of the city while leaving enough time to appreciate each destination. Whether you’re visiting before heading to the islands or planning a quick city break, this two-day itinerary will help you experience Manila at its best.

Day 1: Discover the Historic Side of Manila

Start your morning in Intramuros, the historic Walled City and one of the Philippines’ most important cultural landmarks. Home to Fort Santiago, Casa Manila, Plaza Roma, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed San Agustin Church, Intramuros offers an excellent introduction to Philippine history.

Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, spend time walking through the cobblestone streets, visiting museums, and exploring restored Spanish-era buildings. Every corner tells a story that shaped the country’s past.

If you’re planning your own sightseeing route, Tara! Let’s Explore Manila: A Cultural Adventure Made Easier via CAVITEX highlights additional cultural stops that can easily be added to your itinerary, making it a useful companion for first-time visitors.

After your historical tour, stop by one of the cafés inside Intramuros before making your way to Binondo for lunch.

Experience Binondo’s Legendary Food Scene

Located just a few minutes from Intramuros, Binondo is the world’s oldest Chinatown and one of Manila’s top food destinations. The district is famous for preserving generations of Chinese-Filipino culinary traditions, with family-owned restaurants serving recipes that have been passed down for decades.

A food crawl is one of the best ways to experience Binondo. Try freshly made dumplings, hand-pulled noodles, siopao, lumpia, hopia, and traditional Chinese pastries while exploring Ongpin Street and its surrounding alleys.

If you’re planning to spend several hours in the district, staying nearby offers greater convenience. Hotel Lucky Chinatown provides comfortable accommodations within walking distance of Binondo’s restaurants, shopping centers, and cultural attractions, making it an ideal base for travelers who want to fully explore the neighborhood.

Travelers celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or family gatherings may also appreciate Celebrate Milestones Amid Culture and History at Hotel Lucky Chinatown, which showcases how the hotel blends modern hospitality with the rich heritage of Chinatown.

Watch the Sunset at Manila Bay

As the afternoon winds down, head to Manila Bay, one of the city’s most iconic attractions. The Baywalk comes alive before sunset as locals and tourists gather to enjoy panoramic waterfront views, cool sea breezes, and live street performances.

Watching the sunset over Manila Bay remains one of the most memorable experiences in the capital. Arrive at least an hour before sunset to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the changing colors across the horizon.

Complete your evening with dinner at Manila Bay Kitchen, where guests can enjoy Filipino and international cuisine while overlooking the famous bay. The restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to end your first day in Manila.

If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, don’t miss Savor the Ultimate Steak Night at Sheraton Manila Bay’s Manila Bay Kitchen for a premium dining experience featuring expertly prepared steaks and an impressive buffet selection.

Day 2: Explore Museums, Parks, and Shopping

Begin your second day by visiting the National Museum Complex, where you’ll find impressive collections of Filipino art, anthropology, and natural history. Admission is free, making it one of the best-value attractions in Manila.

From there, take a leisurely walk through Rizal Park, one of the country’s most significant historical landmarks. The park provides a peaceful escape from the city’s busy streets while honoring the life and legacy of Dr. José Rizal.

If shopping is part of your itinerary, spend the afternoon exploring Greenbelt, SM Mall of Asia, or Lucky Chinatown Mall. These destinations offer everything from international brands to locally made products, giving visitors plenty of options for souvenirs, fashion, and dining.

Travel Tips for a Weekend in Manila

To make the most of your visit:

Start sightseeing early to avoid heavier traffic.

Wear comfortable walking shoes for heritage districts like Intramuros and Binondo.

Use ride-hailing apps for convenient transportation.

Carry cash for local eateries and smaller shops.

Schedule outdoor attractions during the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Reserve restaurants in advance if you’re dining on weekends.

If your Manila stay is only the beginning of a longer Philippine vacation, continue your adventure by reading How to Plan a Philippine Island-Hopping Trip for 2026 to build an itinerary that connects some of the country’s most beautiful island destinations.

Make the Most of Your Manila Escape

A perfect weekend in Manila is about balancing history, food, culture, and modern city life. Walking through the centuries-old streets of Intramuros, enjoying authentic Chinese-Filipino cuisine in Binondo, watching the sunset over Manila Bay, and discovering world-class museums all offer different perspectives of the Philippine capital.

Whether you’re staying for two days or using Manila as the starting point for a longer journey across the Philippines, the city rewards travelers who take the time to explore beyond the usual tourist attractions. With thoughtful planning and a relaxed pace, you’ll discover why Manila remains one of Southeast Asia’s most fascinating urban destinations.

By Roel Hoang Manipon

As the sun dipped into the horizon of the Lingayen Gulf, a new spectacle began to unfold at the Pangasinan Capitol Complex. The reflecting pool came alive in a wash of color—lights pulsing beneath the water, jets rising and falling in rhythmic bursts. From the shoreline, the view led the eye inward, toward a dancing fountain that frames the stately capitol building. It was a test and preview, but it was also a promise: a glimpse of a transformed civic landscape entering a new chapter under Governor Ramon “Mon-mon” V. Guico III.

Long regarded as one of the most picturesque provincial government centers in the country, the Pangasinan Capitol Complex in the capital town of Lingayen owes much of its character to its setting and history. Facing the gulf, its neoclassical lines rise amid open grounds and coastal air—a composition shaped as much by architecture as by geography. Designed by American architect Ralph Harrington Doane, the complex was built between 1918 and 1919, during the American colonial period. While heavily damaged during World War II, it was reconstructed from 1948 to 1949 and also underwent refurbishment in 2008. Now, the complex is undergoing its most ambitious transformation.

Tourist Rest Area located at the provincial capitol complex.

At the heart of the redevelopment is the 200-by-22-meter reflecting pool and interactive fountain—now emerging as the complex’s visual and experiential centerpiece. It is bordered by landscaped greens and planted with native species, including dita trees (Alstonia scholaris), whose fragrant blooms and long-standing medicinal uses anchor the space in local ecology. The effect is a civic environment that does not merely impress, but breathes.

Yet the transformation extends beyond aesthetics. The redevelopment integrates infrastructure and heritage. A Heritage Park is being established to display war relics and narrate Pangasinan’s past, while a modernized flood control and drainage system addresses long-standing environmental concerns. Rising alongside these is an 11-story Government Center, envisioned as a centralized hub for provincial services—bringing offices together into a single, accessible space.

Completing the vision is a 1,500-seat convention center, designed to position Lingayen as a major venue for gatherings. With existing facilities such as the Sison Auditorium and the Provincial Training Center, the Capitol Complex is poised to evolve into a cultural and economic node—one that serves not only governance, but also tourism, enterprise, and public life.

At the heart of the redevelopment is the 200-by-22-meter reflecting pool and interactive fountain now emerging as the complex’s visual and experiential centerpiece

The scale of the effort was underscored in the governor’s own words during the 2025 State of the Province Address: “For the first time, Pangasinan will construct legacy projects that will redefine the landscape and aesthetically transform the Capitol Complex. Never before had there been any effort to do this.”

He described the Government Tower as a “one-stop shop” that will streamline services and attract both national agencies and private enterprises—an attempt to bring efficiency and economic dynamism into the provincial seat. The convention center, meanwhile, is seen as a catalyst for positioning Lingayen as the “conference capital” of the Ilocos Region.

The project is a new landmark not only for residents but also for visitors.

But perhaps the most immediate symbol of change is the reflecting pool and dancing fountain itself—an intervention that is as much about identity as it is about spectacle.

“No other reflecting pool and dancing fountain in the Philippines today even comes close to what we are about to unveil in Pangasinan,” the governor declared, framing the project as a new landmark not only for residents but also for visitors.

In many ways, the redevelopment draws a clear line between past and present. It acknowledges years when, as the governor put it, “things were left undone,” while asserting a renewed urgency in shaping the future. The language is pointed—contrasting stagnation with progress, mediocrity with excellence—but the physical outcome suggests something more measured: a layering of old and new, rather than a replacement.

The reflecting pool comes alive in a wash of color—lights pulsing beneath the water, jets rising and falling in rhythmic bursts

The Capitol Complex, after all, is not simply a site of government. It is a lived space—where history, daily life, and civic imagination intersect. Its neoclassical façade, once a symbol of colonial order, now stands before illuminated waters and modern structures that speak to contemporary aspirations.

As the fountains rose and fell against the twilight, what emerged was not just a revitalized complex, but a redefined sense of place. In Lingayen, the meeting point of sea and state is being reshaped—carefully, visibly, and with an eye toward the years to come.

It is said that turning a hobby into a source of income is easier than ever. But what really makes a hobby profitable is not just enjoying the leisure-time activity, but also finding a group of people who share the same passion or interest. This is especially true for Jimi Lee Herrera, whose love of riding the waves in La Union has led him to start Boho Surf Hostel, an accommodation for surfers and beach lovers alike.

Located on Kalapaw Road, Brgy. Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union, Boho Surf Hostel sits on a 200-sq. m. property a few meters from the beach. According to Jimi, he acquired the property in the Surfing Capital of the North in the last quarter of 2021 and wasted no time on renovations. It formally began operation in January 2022.

A four-and-a-half-hour drive from Manila, Boho Surf Hostel caters to groups of friends, families, couples, or solo travelers who love the beach and surfing. It offers shared dormitory-style rooms, as well as semi-private and private rooms with shared facilities such as a kitchen, bathroom, and lounges.

“Before the establishment of Boho Surf Hostel, I had been frequenting La Union after I was introduced to surfing and fell in love with it,” began Jimi, who is a registered nurse and owner of such other businesses as The Drip Manila and Domescape, a glamping resort in Nasugbu, Batangas.

“It so happened that one of my clients in my IV drip business owned one of the hostels there, and since their contract was about to end, this client of mine offered it to me. So, thinking it was nice to have a place I could call home in La Union, because it has already become my happy place, I agreed to have it renovated when I got the property. I also did some color changes to it,” he added.

Initially, Jimi saw the property as the realization of his dream of owning a beach house. But La Union was also flourishing as the Surfing Capital of the North, especially right after the pandemic. That’s when he felt the drive to convert the place into a sustainable venture.

“When it was offered to me five years ago, I truly felt that it was given to me and really meant for me, so I grabbed it (without hesitation).”

Balinese-inspired aesthetics and design

From the very beginning, Jimi wanted a place with a laid-back charm—something that could make everyone feel relaxed and away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The property was built with a Balinese-inspired space utilizing sustainable local materials, including bamboo poles for walls and parts of the flooring, and dried Nipa palm leaves (also called pawid) for the roof. He kept the structure intact, although some said that it was hard to maintain because bamboo won’t last long. Luckily, the structure proved to be sturdy and has remained disaster-resilient even after it was hit by Typhoon Uwan last November. Jimi said they only had repairs in areas that are often wet and with heavy foot traffic.

A hidden gem in Urbiztondo

Boho Surf Hostel is far from the beach, yet Jimi believes it is a hidden gem in Urbiztondo.

“Before, I was saying it’s quite far from the beach because we need to walk along the small street but now, I realized it’s a gem in a chaotic, busy Urbiztondo. It’s a hidden gem. It’s the best place for relaxation. With its interiors painted in colors of the sea, it’s truly calming to the senses.”

The hostel has three bunk rooms with eight beds each, and lockers under the beds. Each room can accommodate eight to 10 people at ₱900 per head.

Guests also have the option of staying in a private room with a queen-size bed and their own toilet and bath (₱3,000 per night) or in a semi-private room with two single beds and shared bathrooms—one for male guests and one for female guests (₱2,000 per night).

More often than not, guests staying in a hostel are “in the same boat,” which makes it easy to build connections and win new friends, knowing you have the same interests and passions. At Boho Surf Hostel, it’s not just a place to sleep and relax, but also where guests connect easily.

“We bind people, we make them friends, even families. We are happy for our guests who end up as friends,” said Jimi.

The four-member staff at Boho Surf Hostel can also connect guests to surfing schools if they want to improve their surfing skills or arrange a city tour for families looking for other activities with their kids.

By Kenneth M. del Rosario

There’s something about Siargao in summer that hits differently—the air hums with salt and sun, mornings feel unhurried, and even the dogs look like they’ve figured life out. You don’t have to be a surfer to fall for it. In four days, I found myself slowing down, chasing the kind of calm that doesn’t come with notifications or deadlines.

Getting there already felt like a small win. We caught the 4 AM Sunlight Air flight from Clark, which sounds brutal on paper but makes perfect sense once you land in Siargao before most people have had breakfast. By 7 AM, we were on the island, with a full day ahead and none of that rushed, half-day arrival feeling. The flight itself was smooth, straightforward, and surprisingly comfortable, with a proper meal to start things off.

A quiet kind of stay

We checked in at KATIG Beachfront Boutique Hotel, a low-key spot with just 11 rooms, six of them facing the ocean. It’s minimalist but not cold, think clean lines, local details, and small touches that actually feel thought through. Wooden boat keychains, skylights in the bathrooms, verandas that make you want to wake up early for no reason. It’s quiet, but not in a boring way. More like the kind of quiet you realize you need.

Another place that leaves an impression is Siago Beach Resort, which doubles as both a boutique stay and a restaurant worth going out of your way for. Built by Maite Ortoll and Kris Garcia, it has that lived-in feel that’s hard to fake. The menu jumps from Peruvian-style lomo saltado to Filipino comfort dishes, and somehow it all works.

Where to eat between swims

Food quickly becomes part of the routine in Siargao. Alma Siargao is one of those places you plan your day around. Chef Luis Martinez works closely with local fishermen, so whatever lands on your table is about as fresh as it gets. The menu is Spanish—paella, gambas, smoked duck breast—but nothing feels out of place on the island. The space is intimate, with warm, neutral tones and a relaxed, coastal feel, featuring a rooftop that’s best enjoyed just before sunset.

Alma Siargao brings Spanish flavors to the island, serving fresh seafood-driven dishes in a calm, coastal setting best enjoyed as the sun dips.

For something more casual, Kanin Baboy delivers exactly what the name promises, and does it well. No frills, no overthinking—just solid, satisfying Filipino food that hits especially hard after a long day out. It’s the kind of place you end up at without planning, and then quietly consider going back to the next day.

Kanin Baboy keeps things simple and satisfying with no-frills Filipino comfort food that hits best after long days in the sun and salt.

If you’re in the mood for something more social, LOKA Siargao near Cloud 9 leans into that beachside energy. Cocktails, small plates, and music that starts out chill and gradually picks up as the night goes on. We happened to catch a launch event during our visit, with DJs and a crowd that felt equal parts local and visiting, which is usually when Siargao feels most alive.

Watching the waves at Cloud 9

Siargao is, of course, known for surfing. Even if you don’t plan on paddling out, it’s hard not to get pulled into it. I didn’t surf on this trip, but I spent a lot of time just watching—surfers waiting it out, reading the waves, catching them at just the right moment. There’s something oddly calming about it, like everyone’s tuned into the same rhythm.

Cloud 9 is where most of that action happens, and it’s worth a visit even just to sit, watch, and take it all in. And then there are the sunsets, arguably the best part. The sky softens, the light turns warmer, and for a while, everything slows down even more.

Surfboards, saltwater, and slow afternoons—Siargao’s beaches are less about doing everything and more about settling into the rhythm of the island.

A similar kind of pause happens at Katangnan Bridge, or “Afam Bridge,” depending on who you ask. It’s less about what you do and more about just being there. People show up before sunset, grab whatever’s being grilled nearby, and hang around until the sky fades. It’s casual, a little crowded, but easy to enjoy.

The usual route that still works

You don’t go to Siargao and skip island hopping. The usual route—Guyam, Naked, and Daku Islands—is popular for a reason. Guyam is small and postcard-ready, Naked is exactly what it sounds like, and Daku is where you actually stay awhile.

Lunch is usually laid out boodle-style, with fresh seafood and whatever else the boat crew has arranged. Daku has this laid-back, almost throwback feel. No pressure to do anything except eat, swim, and maybe nap if the breeze hits just right.

Back on the main island, it’s the in-between moments that stick. Early morning runs along long, quiet roads. Walking on the beach before it gets too hot. Random stops that turn into full meals. And yes, the dogs deserve a mention as they’re everywhere, friendly without being clingy, and somehow always part of the scene.

Going beyond General Luna

As convenient as General Luna is, heading north shifts the mood completely. The Magsaysay Sunset Viewpoint trades beachfront crowds for rolling hills and open views, with sunsets that feel a bit more low-key. Pasikon Beach in San Benito is even quieter—it’s wide, clean, and largely untouched. It’s the kind of place where you don’t feel the need to check your phone.

Further out, Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen offers a different kind of escape. It’s all still water and mangroves, with paddleboards, kayaks, and bamboo rafts drifting around. There’s a diving board if you’re up for it, but it’s just as easy to spend an hour doing nothing.

For something more tide-dependent, the Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar are worth timing your day around. When the water pulls back, clear pools appear between the rocks, which is good for a swim, or just sitting there and pretending you planned your timing perfectly.

Inland, Taktak Falls offers a cooler break from the heat, with a short trip leading to a deep pool and a rope swing that people either commit to or immediately regret.

Katangnan Bridge, better known as “Afam Bridge,” turns into an easy sunset gathering spot where people line up for golden hour, snacks in hand, waiting for the sky to shift.

One last stop before leaving

Even the exit felt very on-brand. On the way to the airport, we made a quick stop at Gwapitos. It’s part coffee spot, part surf shop, part last-minute “wait, I should bring something home.” A quick cup, a bit of browsing, and then back on the road. It’s a small thing, but it rounds out the trip nicely.

A quick stop at Gwapitos in General Luna—part café, part surf shop—makes for an easy coffee break before heading back to the airport.

Siargao doesn’t try too hard, and that’s probably why it works. You can plan your days, or not. You can do everything, or very little. Either way, it meets you where you are. Four days in, and it still felt like there was more to figure out—which is usually a good sign you’ll be back.

The third installment of the Travel Sale Expo (TSE) is coming up with more surprises in store for the traveling public. The event organized by Oneklik Events and the Global Tourism Business Association (GTBA), will take place on September 26-28, 2025 at the Megatrade Hall in SM Megamall with the theme, “Your Gateway To The World.”

Visitors will have the chance to score dropdown deals and big discounts on all things travel, and have the opportunity to learn the latest about travel requirements, tourism trends, as well as new and emerging destinations with more than 200 booths from participating airlines, hotels, tours, and cruises sectors.

“Our goal is to make travel accessible to all Filipinos, empowering ordinary citizens to explore beyond borders through events like the Travel Sale Expo,” GTBA Founding Chairman and TSE Chairperson Michelle Taylan said.

So what can visitors expect from the Travel Sale Expo 2025?

Destination spotlight

Newbie outbound travelers will be able to learn more about top destinations like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, as well as emerging fan-favorite spots in Southeast Asia like Vietnam. Tourists eyeing pilgrimage tours will also get an idea about travel to religious sites in the Balkan Peninsula in Europe.

As for inbound and domestic travel, Taylan said Manila, Cebu, Siquijor, Bohol, and Boracay are seeing steady numbers with increased visitor arrivals from Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Muslim countries.

Cebu’s tourism saw stable growth in the last three years, with five million arrivals in 2024 mostly led by visitors from South Korea. Meanwhile, the Philippine’s world-renowned island gem Boracay, saw two million visitors last year.

Some panelists, including ambassadors from neighboring Southeast Asian countries, and Michelle Taylan (2nd from left), GTBA Founding Chairman and TSE Chairperson, during the TSE 2025 launch.

Budget-friendly travel

“It’s not always YOLO and FOMO. People are being smarter about their travels and opting for pre-booked travel packages, which are more affordable and offer peace of mind because they have legitimate travel businesses assisting them and ensuring a smooth trip,” Taylan said.

Taylan adds that more people are taking advantage of installment payment options available for pre-booked packages.

“Travelers can definitely take advantage of flexible payment terms at the Travel Sale Expo. It’s a one-stop shop for every travel need. You can start off with talking to tourism organizations and embassy representatives, then head on to scheduling and booking your trip. After that, you can shop for affordable travel essentials and more,” she said.

PH and Halal tourism boost

Aside from the Department of Tourism, the GTBA-Oneklik will also have a new government agency partner for this year’s Travel Sale Expo. The Department of Trade and Industry has signed on for the September travel sale, giving exposure to local tourism-related businesses.

“Tangible tourism products that showcase the Philippines’ exquisite beauty and culture will also be highlighted in TSE 2025, thanks to the DTI,” Taylan said.

The trade department will also serve as a partner in promoting Halal tourism in the Philippines. There have been efforts to improve Muslim-friendly offers in various local destinations in recent years, in line with the national tourism policy to improve two-way tourism with ASEAN countries.

Jocelyn Lim-Bata, Head, Credit Card Sales Division Consumer Business Sector, Metrobank (left), TSE’s official bank partner, and Michelle Taylan.

Other perks and surprises

Participating travel businesses can also take the opportunity to expand their networks and discuss ongoing trends affecting the tourism market.

“We’re always pushing for meaningful dialogue and lasting partnerships, so there will be seminars for local and international suppliers,” Taylan said.

So, get ready for an epic showdown! There will be a slew of talent competitions that will keep visitors on the edge of their seats, like cosplay showdowns, the Love the Philippines dance competition that’s gonna get everyone movin’ and groovin’, and surprise performances by famous personalities that will blow their minds.

Unlock a world of travel possibilities at the Travel Sale Expo 2025! Meet top travel experts and tour operators, get exclusive offers and personalized travel advice, and book your dream trip on the spot!

This event is in partnership with Boracay Malay Aklan LGU Tourism, Tourism Malaysia Manila, Malaysia Embassy Manila, Embassy of India Manila, Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) and is co-presented and supported by the Department of Tourism.

Official key sponsors: GCash (Platinum Sponsor). Metrobank (Bank Partner), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Marriott Hotel, Guam Visitors Bureau, Tourism Malaysia, St. Augustine Travel and Tours, United Airlines, Air Asia, and Rajah Travel.

Travel isn’t just about the destinations we reach — it’s about the stories we bring home. This is the vision behind “Travel Tales,” a new talk series by World Traveller that champions authentic travel experiences through the voices of seasoned explorers.

For its inaugural session, World Traveller featured Kach Umandap, the youngest Filipina to journey across all 195 countries with a Philippine passport. In a live preview at Newport Mall, Umandap went beyond her milestone to share the realities of traveling solo, busting myths and misconceptions many Filipinos have about visas, and shared smart travel hacks, and cultural encounters that shaped her global journey.

She revealed the simple tools that became her trusted travel companions — including her bright Dubai Lime Punch luggage from World Traveller, which she says is more than just stylish. “It’s so practical — with its neon color, I can always spot it immediately at the baggage claim carousel. It saves me time and keeps my travels stress-free,” she shared. She also led a session on first-time traveler myths — debunking common beliefs like “weekend bookings are cheapest” or “a return ticket is always required.” Instead, she armed the audience with actionable insights: book midweek for better deals, use onward tickets to satisfy immigration, and follow airlines’ newsletters for hidden promos.

To complement her stories, the event featured a live packing demonstration with World Traveller luggage and The Travel Club’s smart travel essentials — from World Traveller packing cubes that maximize space, to World Traveller Digital Weighing Scales that save travelers from unexpected airport fees.

“Travel Tales is our way of bringing real journeys closer to people,” shared by Ruby Palma, AVP of World Traveller . “Kach’s story proves that travel isn’t just about ticking off countries — it’s about preparation, discovery, and meaningful connections. Our mission has always been to equip modern explorers with the right travel gear and inspire them to see the world with confidence.” Through “Travel Tales,” World Traveller reinforces its mission to equip and inspire modern explorers, proving that with the right mindset and the right gear, every trip — whether across oceans or across town — becomes a story worth telling.

The Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) Philippines launched on July 15, 2025 the 11th Virtus Awards, a milestone edition that elevates the prestigious program beyond recognizing excellence in hotel sales and marketing to champion the critical mission of empowering the next generation of industry leaders.

With the theme “Paths & Bridges: Leading the Way and Building Continuity,” this year’s Virtus Awards serve as both tribute and challenge: honoring the trailblazers who have defined Philippine hospitality while challenging today’s leaders to build new bridges of knowledge, mentorship, and innovation toward a future shaped by younger professionals.

“It’s a vision that aligns with HSMA’s core educational pillar and the industry’s broader goals of travel recovery, tourism growth, wellness, and sustainable leadership development,” said Loleth So, HSMA President.

Loleth So, HSMA President

The official launch coincided with HSMA’s General Membership Meeting at Fairmont Makati, featuring keynote speaker Therese “Gang” Badoy Capati, President of Rock Ed Philippines and trauma therapist. Her presentation, “Rock the Talk,” addressed the vital need for effective communication across multi-generational teams in today’s rapidly evolving hospitality landscape.

“Gang Capati shared compelling insights on bridging the generational divide within our teams,” says Rose Libongco, Virtus Awards Chair. “This responds directly to the industry’s call for more coherent and collaborative teamwork. We encourage leaders to bring their teams, the new generation must understand the journey that brought us here, just as we must understand the paths they are forging.”

The Virtus X-factor: Going beyond performance

As in previous years, the 11th Virtus Awards continues to seek individuals and teams who go beyond delivering results in order to influence genuine change. The coveted X-factor encompasses not only exceptional performance but also the courage to innovate, the ability to mentor, and the vision to lead with empathy and foresight. “Whether reviving destinations, building new markets, or creating campaigns that restore traveler confidence, Virtus XI honors those who redefine industry standards and elevate the bar for excellence,” adds Margarita Munsayac, HSMA Chair.

This year’s edition introduces enhanced judging criteria that reflect post-pandemic travel realities, an expanded network of industry partners, and a platform for sharing stories of resilience and innovation. These updates position Virtus XI as potentially the most meaningful and impactful edition in the program’s history. There will still be three solo awards: Outstanding Sales and Marketing Associate, Outstanding Sales and Marketing Manager, and Outstanding Sales and Marketing Leader. The sole group category is the Institutional Award for Most Outstanding Marketing Campaign of the Year.

Cultivating tomorrow’s leaders today

Beyond its role as an awards platform, Virtus has evolved into a movement for excellence and mentorship.
Beyond the busy streets of Manila lies a city rich in history and culture, now more accessible than ever for Caviteños via the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX). Motorists from Las Piñas and Parañaque may also use the CAVITEX Sucat Interchange, with entry along Dr. A. Santos Avenue, for a more convenient route to these destinations. On March 14, 2025, Metro Pacific Tollways South (MPT South) successfully hosted Biyaheng South: Tara, Let’s Explore Manila, an immersive cultural tour made possible through partnerships with Intramuros Administration, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Food Wanderer x Lakbay Museo, and Space & Time Cube. This unique experience allowed selected Ka-Biyaheros to rediscover Manila through a seamless blend of history, interactive exhibits, and local flavors—all just a quick and convenient drive from Cavite via CAVITEX.

Three lucky winners, along with their chosen guests, were selected through an online raffle on Biyaheng South’s Facebook page. They joined influencers on an exciting journey to some of Manila’s most iconic landmarks and attractions.

First stop: Intramuros – A walk through history

The first stop was the historic walls of Intramuros, just an hour away from Cavite via CAVITEX. The Intramuros Heritage Tour began at Palacio del Gobernador, a historic Spanish-era building near Manila Cathedral, setting the stage for a journey through time. From there, participants boarded a Tranvia, a charming electric streetcar reminiscent of Manila’s early 20th-century rail transport, for a nostalgic ride through the streets of Intramuros.

The group then visited Fort Santiago, a centuries-old citadel that once served as a military stronghold and the final prison of Dr. José Rizal. Inside, they explored Museo ni Rizal, where they gained insights into the life and works of the national hero. Next, they proceeded to Centro de Turismo to explore Museo de Intramuros, which houses a collection of religious artifacts and colonial-era art that highlight the Spanish influence on Philippine culture.

Why we do this

Arlette V. Capistrano, Vice President for Communication and Stakeholder Management of MPT South, said, “Exploring Manila’s rich history through this event was a unique and immersive experience. It was an opportunity to reconnect with our history and culture while fostering a deeper appreciation for our heritage, allowing them to see the beauty of our past while enjoying the present. We hope this inspires more travelers to rediscover the cultural gems in our own backyard.”

“Tara, Let’s Explore Manila” was launched to provide a unique opportunity for travelers to rediscover the rich history, heritage, and hidden gems of the country’s capital. Manila, often seen as just a gateway to other destinations, holds centuries of history and vibrant culture waiting to be explored. Through this initiative, MPT South sought to showcase the beauty and significance of the city’s historical sites, immersive museums, and cultural landmarks, reinforcing the company’s mission of enhancing connectivity—not only through expressways but also by fostering deeper connections between people and places.
