Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital proudly took center stage at the 2023 DepEd NCR Regional Science and Technology Fair (RSTF) held on December 1-2, 2023 at Muntinlupa National High School. Not only were they present as esteemed judges, but they also served as a vital partner organizer, reflecting their initiatives in nurturing and empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders.
This involvement stems from their “BIDA Lourdes: Sci-Tech Champs” campaign, a joint initiative with the Department of Education (DepEd) National Capital Region (NCR) that launched in 2023 aiming to reshape the Philippines’ healthcare landscape by sparking a passion for science and medicine in junior and senior high school students. Initially launched with an inter-school quiz bowl across NCR, the campaign has now expanded in its second year, encompassing training programs for students and teachers, and the exciting addition of a robotics competition.
The RSTF buzzed with excitement as students showcased their research projects and artistic outputs. Day one saw vibrant poster-making and the submission of research papers, while day two stole the spotlight with a parade featuring students from across NCR, each district cheering with pride. Lourdes Hospital members, judging with discerning eyes, witnessed the culmination of countless hours of dedication.
Lourdes Hospital President and CEO Paul Richard Camangian lauded the students’ impressive efforts in his opening speech, setting the stage for a day brimming with scientific exploration. To empower educators, the hospital’s ancillary team then conducted a comprehensive training program on laboratory procedures, ensuring safe and effective learning environments.
The culmination of the event saw five exceptional students become the inaugural recipients of the “BIDA Lourdes Research Award.” Among them, Justine Eumir D. Aquino from Malanday National High School in Marikina City, stood out with his simple, yet innovative project titled “The Efficiency of an Improvised White Cane with an Ultrasonic Sensor and Buzzer for the Visually Impaired.” This innovative research, demonstrating both ingenuity and social impact, earned Aquino the coveted 1st place, along with a prize of Php50,000.
The RSTF concluded with hearts brimming with hope and minds buzzing with inspiration. Lourdes Hospital, standing side-by-side with DepEd and the students, emerged as more than just judges or organizers—they emerged as catalysts for the next generation of scientists and healthcare heroes. This is just the beginning of an extraordinary journey towards building a healthier Philippines, fueled by the boundless curiosity and unwavering passion of the youth.
