Inspired by the shores: SM City La Union’s design blends nature and modernity

Rising along the shoreline of the Surfing Capital of the North, SM City La Union stands as an architectural ode to coastal living, where nature, sustainability, and modern design flow together in harmony. Just a few waves away from Pagdaraoan Beach, SM’s 89th mall reflects SM Supermalls’ vision for people-centered, environmentally responsible, and community-driven development in the New Era of SM Supermalls.

Catch the cozy aesthetic at SM City La Union — lush greens, natural light, good energy only.

The architecture draws inspiration from the rhythm of the sea and the strength of the shore. Its façade combines clean, contemporary lines with local stonework, vertical fins, and greenery that soften the structure and blend it with the landscape. Inside, circular skylights allow natural light to flood the interiors, creating a bright, open environment that mirrors the coastline’s calm and energy.

At the center of the atrium stands the Grand LED Staircase, a modern architectural highlight that brings motion and color to the space. Each illuminated step ripples with light, evoking the movement of waves. Overhead, a chandelier crafted from seashells and rattan showcases local craftsmanship, adding warmth through organic materials that capture the natural beauty of La Union.

Art with purpose. This Magwayen’s Chrysalis piece brings island vibes, local love, and eco creativity — step inside, play the bamboo instruments, and chill in the shade.

At night, get lit with its stunning lightshow.

Completing the vision is a striking art installation by Filipino artist Leeroy New, featuring a spaceship-inspired canopy made from bamboo and upcycled plastic bottles, some of which were sourced from the mall’s own construction. The piece symbolizes the synergy between sustainability and creativity, transforming recycled materials into art that fosters a connection between people and their surroundings.

Sandbox is the spot for volleys and good times.

Just outside, visitors have direct access to The Sandbox. At this outdoor destination, they can play volleyball, enjoy daily live entertainment, and relax in the sea breeze, extending the mall experience into the open coastal air.

“SM City La Union embodies what the New Era of SM Supermalls is all about,” said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “We continue to champion sustainability in design while creating spaces that inspire connection, support local communities, and celebrate the beauty of the environment. Every detail reflects our ‘All For You’ philosophy, where innovation and care meet to enhance every customer experience.”

Through its thoughtful integration of light, texture, and local artistry, SM City La Union redefines modern mall architecture in Northern Luzon. It stands as a testament to progress that respects its surroundings. It celebrates the soul of the shore, a true reflection of SM Supermalls’ commitment to sustainability, creativity, and community in this new era.
